We are educating youth for the future

We are educating youth for the future
At MSLA we are actively responding to the global call to transform education and to ensure that young people, from disadvantaged backgrounds, are offered a learning experience that is of high quality and relevant for today and for the future.

Educating for the future is all about cultivating a passion in our youth for creating new value to our changing and complex world. The development of global awareness, a deep spirit of caring for others, the ability to collaborate, as well as a keen sense of responsibility and commitment, are all at the heart of educating for a better future.

The MSLA campus, which is situated in Kimberley, Northern Cape Province, South Africa, is home to 300 Grade 9 – 12 learners from 18 high schools each year. These learners participate in afternoon classes, Saturday classes, holiday academies and community outreach programmes, where they volunteer their time and effort in making a difference in the lives of others.

Our learners are expected to demonstrate a growth mindset, hard work, commitment and determination, as well as a live-to-give spirit on their journey towards self-development.
They are taught by the best possible teachers from local schools, as well as Maths and Science Subject Advisors from the Department of Education.

Our Programmes

Academic support in Maths & Science

While the focus of the maths and physical sciences classes is on the curriculum, MSLA uses a maths problem-solving approach for the Grade 9 – 11 classes on Saturdays. Developing problem-solving skills is important for preparing youth for the real world, fostering a growth mindset and developing skills for the future.

Career Guidance

We believe that career guidance at school level has a pivotal role to play in addressing the high rate of youth unemployment in South Africa, as well as the very high dropout rate of first-year university students across all universities in the country.
Much is done through the Career Guidance Programme to ensure our youth are inspired to have a dream and are self-driven in achieving their dreams.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL is the process of developing self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making and relationship skills.
It includes 7 mindsets: everything is possible; passion first; 100% accountable; we are connected; live to give; attitude of gratitude; the time is NOW!
Research shows that school-based efforts to promote students’ social emotional learning skills is an effective approach to enhance children’s success in school and in life as a whole.
MSLA has introduced the SEL Programme for all Grade 9 – 11 learners with amazing outcomes. The Grade 9 and 10 learners have started creating their own SEL blog posts for the MSLA website.

Global Citizenship Education

The development of global citizens – young people who are globally aware and are passionate about being change-makers for a better world – is the goal of our Global Citizenship Education Programme.
Through MSLA’s Global Citizenship Education (GCED) Programme, the Grade 9 – 11 learners are motivated to volunteer their time and effort in implementing MSLA’s “Kids teaching Kids” community outreach projects:

  • Grade 4 Make Reading Count Outreach Programme
  • Grade 11 Career Guidance Outreach Programme
  • Grade 10 SEL Outreach Programme

Digital literacy skills development

We recognise that we live in a world that is driven and powered by technology, making digital literacy a core fundamental competency for future success and a major part of our programmes.
With South Africa’s high rate of youth unemployed, MSLA has consolidated its efforts in preparing school-going youth for the future of work and societies. The use of technology is well integrated in the innovative learning experiences we offer.
MSLA is registered as a Microsoft Education Institution and all learners and teachers have Microsoft 365 Education accounts.

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certifications

MSLA is a public Certiport Authorised Testing Centre and offers certifications in MOS.

All MSLA Grade 10 – 12 learners are offered opportunities to achieve MOS certifications in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Grade 9 learners who show ability are included.

Since 2022, a total of 431 Grade 8 – 12 learners have achieved MOS certifications, with some learners achieving Word and Excel at expert level.
