Project Making a Difference

Project Making a Difference

Project Making a Difference is a registered NPO, a Woolworths MySchool/MyVillage beneficiary, a Public Benefit Organisation in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Bellville, Cape Town.

We partnered with various stakeholders to provide the students with financial assistance to meet their daily basic needs of food, living expenses, transport, stationery, course readers/textbooks, toiletries, and sanitary pads, and to a limited extent, accommodation, from February to November each year.

Project Making a Difference is based on the UBUNTU principle – we are because of others. We believe that together, we can reach hearts and change lives.

Main Objectives

  • To increase the retention and throughput of undergraduate financially challenged students in the EMS Faculty at UWC; and

  • To positively change the trajectory of students’ lives to assist the country in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty, Goal 2: Zero Hunger, Goal 3: Good health and well-being, Goal 4: A quality education, Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth, and Goal 10: Reduced inequalities.

  • Started with 8 students in April 2012, to supporting 1288 students at the end of 2024

  • Supported students who not only completed their degree programmes, but graduated Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude and at the recent Spring Graduation in April 2024, Magna Cum Laude. These students all have good-paying jobs and are actively changing the lives of their families and communities.

  • We partnered with financial managers at Momentum and Metroplan and developed a six-month internship for students who did not find employment immediately after graduation.
