Established in 2008, Thanda is a community-based organization that has grown to provide comprehensive support to the children and families living in rural communities of Umzumbe Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Thanda’s systems- approach intertwines interventions in Early Childhood Development, Child & Youth Development, and Organic Farming to more effectively break generational cycles in local communities. These evidence- based programmes work with beneficiaries at the individual level (empowering people from birth to elderly), the household level (creating stronger guardian-child relationships and home learning environments) and even neighbourhood level (creating local cohesion and food security networks) in multifaceted ways to enable these rural communities to become truly resilient.

Thanda Food Security and Economic Development was introduced in 2015. It empowers women, youth, and elderly people to build resilience by becoming smallholder famers through the provision of not only agricultural and infrastructural inputs, but also valuable skills building and ongoing hands-on support through trained farming mentors. These interventions provide food security for subsistence and, in many cases, also earn the farmers a reliable income, decreasing their dependency on social grants.
The two main programmes within this initiative are:
Nisela Programme – empowers community members to initiate or scale their farming ventures on communally-irrigated and fenced plots
Household Gardening Programme – enables households to achieve food security through establishing a home garden.
The success of Thanda Food Security and Economic Development Programme is clear in their consistent growth over time. The value of produce grown annually across the programmes, has grown steadily from R26,000 in 2015 to R8.6 million in 2024.
