About Ubunye Foundation

Ubunye Foundation operates in Ngqushwa and Makanda in Eastern Cape. It is a rural development trust that aims to address chronic economic poverty and economic marginalization.  Their philosophy is to support people to realise their own agency and ability to shape their lives and communities in positive and lasting ways. This is done through an asset-based community-driven approach that acknowledges existing local strengths, emphasizes local ownership and avoids a level of involvement that may lead to dependency.

Rural communities (green business training & entrepreneurship)

Main objective

To enable communities to lead in pursuit of sustainable development that builds resilience to climate change.

The Ubunye Foundation is a community-led organisation, meaning all programmes are designed, the implementation managed and monitored and evaluated by the people in the community who take part in them. In the Savings and Livelihoods programme Ubunye works with nearly 2000 women to save money and invest those savings in thriving green business. Green businesses are attuned to the environment using environmentally sustainable ways of operating, sharing that knowledge with the local community, whilst benefiting vulnerable groups.

To ensure this sustainable lifestyle Ubunye provide women with green business identification techniques and microbusinesses skills enabling them to do basic accounting, marketing, money management and financial planning.
